They are the world’s most magnificent dancers:
a retina-shredding spectacle of passion and power.
─── The Sunday Herald
NDT (Nederlands Dans Theater) produces about ten new works a year in collaboration with talented and spirited choreographers and outstanding dancers from all over the world. They are one of the most popular contemporary dance companies in the world that continues to perform in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2019, NDT visited Japan for the first time in 13 years, and the Kanagawa performance received unprecedented success, with people standing in the gallery to see the show. NDT will return to Japan for the first time in five years with Emily Molnar, who has served as Artistic Director since 2020 and will perform three out of five gorgeous works in different combinations for each performance. The diverse group of works by highly sought-after choreographers, NDT Associate Choreographers Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke, Artistic Director of Peeping Tom Gabriela Carrizo, L-E-V choreographers Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar, and master choreographer William Forsythe, selected for the Japan tour will give you a thorough insight into the company's appeal. We invite you to the theater in the summer of 2024 to experience NDT as it is today.

This is the first full-fledged introduction to Japan of Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar's dance piece, which is currently attracting attention from around the world. Sixteen dancers emerge from the darkness clad in nude bodysuits, balancing on their toes close to each other. You cannot take your eyes off the delicate yet strong physical ensemble and the bass beats that shake your body from the inside out, generating a burst of energy.
Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar An innovative duo from Israel in the contemporary dance world. Sharon Eyal, born in 1971, worked as a dancer with the Batsheva Dance Company and then as a house choreographer for seven years. In 2001, she co-founded the dance company L-E-V with Gai Behar, a techno rave producer who had a profound influence on live music and underground art events around the year 2000. They are now based in France.

Twenty large desks appear with dancers roaring onto the stage. The dancers come and go at random, dancing without a break according to a number of rules. This is one of Forsythe's masterpieces, popularly known as " The Table Dance," and has been performed by dancers of numerous ballet companies around the world. It is a thrilling work in which we can see the technique, the dynamics, and the meticulous design of the dancers and the stage space beyond the deconstruction of ballet he pursued.
William Forsythe Born in 1949, he has been choreographing for more than 50 years. His activities have had a profound influence on a broad range of generations of creative artists, including his 30 years as artistic director of a ballet company in Frankfurt since 1984. Although initially focused on the structural foundations of academic ballet, he has expanded his choreographic discourse into the field of visual arts since 1991. His stage works are in the repertoire of dance companies around the world. His installation works have been presented internationally in museums and exhibitions.

Crystal Pite left a vivid impression in Japan with "The Statement," which was presented during NDT’s last tour of Japan, and "Revisor" which was presented by Kidd Pivot, the company she presided over in 2023. This work, which creates a fantastical world against a backdrop of falling snow, is performed to two famous sonatas by Brahms and similar to "The Seasons' Canon" by the Paris Opera Ballet, which won the Benoit Prize for Choreography in 2017, is a masterpiece created with inspiration from music.
Crystal Pite Born in 1970 in Vancouver, Canada. She has created more than 50 works for various dance companies since her debut as a choreographer in 1990. She has been an associate choreographer for NDT since 2008. She has also worked as an associate artist for Sadler's Wells in London and collaborated with the Electric Company Theatre and Robert Lepage in theater. Kidd Pivot, founded in 2002, first came to Japan in 2023.

"La Ruta," which is based on a discourse on dreams, means "the way" in Spanish. In addition to the outstanding physicality common to Peeping Tom's works, the piece leads the viewer into a twisted world with flickering lights, stage sets and fragmented images of samurai and graves reminiscent of Japanese horror. This is a challenging and shocking work for NDT, described as "a dystopian dream sprinkled with humor" and "a work like a nightmare" (Bachtrack).
Gabriela Carrizo Born in 1970 in Argentina, she moved to Europe at the age of 19. She became active in making her own choreographic works, founding the dance company Peeping Tom with Franck Chartier in 2000, where she serves as artistic director. With an experimental style that fuses dance and theater, the everyday and the mystical, she created her first work with NDT1, "The missing door," in 2013. Following that, the trilogy was completed with a work by Chartier presented in 2015 and a duo creation presented in 2017. This is the first commissioned work by the artist since then.

This is the 11th work choreographed by Goecke for NDT as a tribute to the Lucent Danstheater, where NDT had long been based (the new theater, Amare, opened in 2021). The physical language of quick, nimble movements of hands and arms that captivated many audiences in "Woke up Blind," performed during the previous tour of Japan, is still evident in this work. The minimalistic movements create a sense of tension and immersion for the audience, while the singing of the music by Harry Belafonte overflows with the emotion of the piece.
Marco Goecke Born 1972 in Wuppertal, Germany. While working as a dancer, he presented his first choreographic work in 2000, and was appointed choreographer-in-residence at the Stuttgart Ballet in 2005. He was a resident choreographer of the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam for six years from 2006 and started choreographing for NDT in 2008. Since 2013, he has been an associate choreographer for NDT.
